Our primary purpose in corporate worship is the same as our primary purpose as individuals: to declare the greatness of God (Psalm 29:2). Meeting together also creates an atmosphere in which believers can celebrate God’s transforming power in their lives and together learn to live as disciples. In exhorting us to live lives pleasing to God, the Bible repeatedly emphasizes the importance of teaching, singing and prayer. These three elements dominate our worship.
- We regard the Bible as God’s Holy Word. Through it, God both demonstrates His greatness and transformative power and teaches us how to live in Him – to love others and make disciples. Because Scripture provides such critical information, it is essential that we know and understand what it says. Our church encourages this by making the reading and teaching of the Bible central to our service.
- In keeping with Scripture’s exhortations to declare God’s greatness in song (Psalm 33:1-3, Psalm 96:1-2, Colossians 3:16), music also plays an essential role in our worship. Music allows us to communicate that which cannot be articulated by words alone. It helps us express both the almighty power of God and our brokenness and need for him. Congregational singing provides an opportunity for active participation, reminding us that worship asks us to give ourselves to God (Romans 12:1) even as we receive grace and mercy in His presence.
- Although prayer is largely a private discipline, we also deeply value corporate prayer as an act of worship. We desire for all we do as a church to be God-centered, a focus we cannot maintain without communicating with the God we seek to honor. Prayer serves as yet another opportunity to engage with God directly and personally.
We believe God uses all of these aspects of worship to reveal His greatness and to make us more like Him. While we strive to include them consistently, we do not feel that they limit us to a particular style or order of worship. You may encounter “traditional” and “contemporary” elements in our worship services. We hope and pray that this frees us from predetermined expectations, allowing us to offer genuine, heartfelt worship to our great God.
Opportunities for Service in the Worship Ministry
Our music and worship arts ministry at Rosemont Baptist Church has two primary objectives: to lead our congregation in declaring God’s greatness through corporate worship, and to encourage and equip music and worship arts ministry members to live as disciples of Jesus.
Worship is a response to the greatness of God and His transforming power in our lives. We employ music in worship because mere words often prove inadequate to express our wonder and gratitude for who God is and what He has done. Our music ministry takes the responsibility of communicating this truth seriously, and strives to encourage the congregation to join us in celebrating it.
While our most visible function is leading worship on Sunday mornings, our time together emphasizes more than just preparation. Each ensemble forms a small community of believers that serves together, prays together, and grows in Christ together.
